Job Description

NOTE: This job position is not open to candidates requiring a H-1B visa for work in the US. If you require a H-1B visa to work in the US, please do not apply.

Arroyo Instruments , a San Luis Obispo-based electronics manufacturer, is looking for an entrepreneurial embedded software engineer to join the Arroyo Instruments team. Graduates with degrees in Computer Engineering , Electrical Engineering , Software Engineering , and Computer Science interested in working at the microprocessor and hardware level are encouraged to apply. We are collecting resumes for interviews that will start in mid-April.

For more than 20 years, Arroyo Instruments has provided precision laser and thermal control systems that are used throughout the photonics industry in research, academic, and commercial applications. Arroyo Instruments products have been used to test Mars rovers, verify lasers for the Laser Interferometer Space Array (LISA), and used by major research universities and national laboratories around the world.

As part of a small, customer-oriented engineering team, this position will involve you in a wide range of activities. While product development will be the primary focus, as a small company, you will also participate in the improvement of our in-house calibration systems, be a part of developing customer applications, providing world-class customer support, and other aspects of company operations.

Product development is focused on smart power supplies, temperature controllers, and related instrumentation. Primary development is in C++ on an in-house developed operating system running on ARM microprocessors, and code makes extensive use of object-oriented design, so experience in OOP is highly desirable. Designs include significant work at the lowest levels of hardware control (SPI, digital I/O, chip-to-chip communications), and you will also be a part of a new design effort specifying new CPU, display, and networking hardware for our next generation products.

While not required, analog design experience is a plus. Most designs include a significant amount of analog circuitry, and understanding that circuitry to evaluate performance, diagnose issues, and even design new hardware would broaden the scope of the position.

Principle responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and implementation of new software and firmware for embedded devices and other control systems
  • Development of embedded graphical user interfaces
  • Development of Windows applications for instrument control and data collection
  • Implementation of Ethernet, USB, and memory card interfaces
  • Microprocessor firmware development using C and C++
  • In-house calibration instrumentation development
  • Supporting customer applications via email and phone

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • C or C++ programming experience in an embedded system environment with preemptive, multitasking real-time operating systems
  • Experience in embedded systems with emphasis on embedded design and programming through relevant work experience or university coursework
  • Desktop application development a plus
  • Strong verbal and written skills

Experience developing products for test and measurement applications is a major plus (i.e., control and measurement instruments such as DMMs, power supplies, and other digitally controlled analog-type instrumentation).

Other skills considered valuable, but not required:

  • Android or iPhone application development
  • Windows application development
  • Reading and understanding schematics
  • Experience using common lab equipment

This position will work alongside an existing senior embedded systems engineer and will be intimately involved in design and development of new instrumentation and desktop control software.

This is a full-time, exempt position. Compensation is dependent on experience, and includes benefits.

Please do not apply for this position if you do not have the minimum required experience and abilities.
