Food Technologist Location Toronto, ON M8Z 1B8 :

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, R&D, the Food Technologist functions as an integral member of Product Development Team. As the successful candidate you will combine culinary flair with knowledge of food science and manufacturing processes. You enjoy the challenge of exceeding customer expectations. You are an excellent communicator and a team player who ensures that the Research and Development department supports Sales and Production and works in conjunction with the other departments.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop high quality products from ideation to plant commercialization for custom and branded products.
  • Prepare samples for customer presentations and participate in product cuttings providing support to Sales.
  • Lead plant trials, develop manufacturing procedures, monitor initial production and finalize product implementation.
  • Ensure products meet government, regulatory and nutritional compliance.
  • Ensure formulation meet or exceed specification for shelf life, consistency and flavour profiles.
  • Participate in ongoing maintenance of formulations, methods and specifications.
  • Continually develop technical expertise and stay current with emerging technologies.
  • Source and test alternative ingredients to improve products, expand supplier base and/or achieve cost savings.
  • Assist in continuous improvement, organization and efficiency of the R&D and manufacturing.
  • Various other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience as Food Technologist or experience in a similar role required.
  • Post-Secondary education in Food Science or a related field required.
  • Experience in a Food Manufacturing or related Food Industry environment required.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in sauces, dressing and mayonnaise development considered as an asset.
  • Expertise in Canadian food legislative requirements considered as an asset.
  • Expertise in Nutritional Facts and ingredient labelling considered as an asset.
  • Proactive with strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, attention to detail, follow and provide instruction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Approximately 10% travel required, with flexibility based on business needs.
