Your opportunity:

The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences is principally housed in the new state of the art Environmental Science and Chemistry Buildings. With over 50 full-time faculty members, and over 20 specialty and sub-specialty programs. We are a powerhouse of environmental research, with offerings to over 100 foreign and domestic students in our postgraduate studies.

The Department’s Teaching and Research in Analytical Chemical and Environmental Science (TRACES) Laboratory (TRACES), is a state-of-the-art facility that provides advance instrument training and chemical analysis to its diverse cliental.

The Laboratory Technician will be instrumental in supporting the TRACES facility through a variety of tasks including everything from the preparation and analysis of samples, record keeping, calibration and cleaning of equipment, waste collection, updating inventories and performing general facility maintenance while adhering to all safety regulations. Your solid understanding of chemistry, chemical analysis and instrumentation theory will be key to your success in contributing to the facilities safe and efficient operations.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results, generating reports and passing on findings
  • Creating a record of deficiency and operational concerns for management
  • Maintaining inventory of equipment/parts, glass and dishware, workstations, chemicals and/or apparatus within the lab
  • Troubleshooting routine equipment repairs
  • Apply established standards when preparing routine samples for lab testing, cleaning lab, rooms and equipment
  • Following rules and procedural instructions when cleaning/sterilizing glassware, transporting and/or disposing of chemical waste
  • Using an assessment checklist when performing sample quality control testing

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science
  • Minimum 2 years related work in an analytical testing or quality control laboratory in a related chemical, pharmaceutical or environmental field.
  • Strong analytical skills to draft statistical reports, verify results, and summarize data
  • Previous training in WHMIS
  • Excellent wet lab chemistry skills including weighing, pipetting, solution and sample preparation
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of chromatographic and analytical instrumentation and an understanding of the operation of various analytical instruments (e.g., FAAS, GC, GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS, IC, EA, UV-Vis, FTIR, TOC, NMR)
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft programs (Outlook, SharePoint, Project, MS Forms)
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to establish priorities, multitask, and meet multiple deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift heavy objects (+25kg) on a regular basis
  • Solid understanding of the various types of hazardous waste in a laboratory, how they should be handled, stored and transported

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Experience with ASTM testing methods for water and/or soil analysis
  • Experience working in a Lab that meets ISO 17025 and/or ISO 9001 requirements
  • Experience preparing real samples for analysis (e.g. dissolution, extraction, reaction, chelation, digestion, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience in setting up, operating and maintaining analytical instruments (e.g. FAA, GC, GC-MS, HPLC, IC, EA, UV-vis, FTIR, TOC, NMR)
  • Experience working with Cryogens
