Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Access to Information and Privacy Officer to join our team. In this key role, you will ensure that WorkSafeBC meets its obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) by providing legal expertise and strategic oversight for access to information and privacy matters.

Reporting to the Manager, Access to Information and Privacy, your work will involve analyzing and responding to complex freedom of information requests, managing high-risk privacy complaints and breaches, and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, ministerial directives, and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC). Additionally, you will provide guidance to senior executives, represent WorkSafeBC in hearings before the OIPC, and collaborate with executives, directors, and internal departments to develop and implement best practices in privacy management and access to information. Your responsibilities will include conducting privacy impact assessments, preparing legal submissions, and delivering in-house training programs to enhance awareness and compliance across the organization.

Where you'll work
At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you will work primarily from our Richmond Office with some flexibility to work from your home in B.C.
  • Conduct legal analysis to identify privacy risks, recommend mitigation measures and complete privacy impact assessments.
  • Advise WorkSafeBC staff on the interpretation and application of FIPPA.
  • Represent WorkSafeBC before the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner by conducting mediations and hearings.
  • Draft appropriate clauses for a variety of information-sharing agreements between WorkSafeBC and third parties.
  • Investigate and respond to privacy complaints and privacy breaches.
  • Respond to complex access to information requests, including analyzing records to identify exceptions to disclosure.
  • Develop and deliver in-house training programs related to FIPPA.
  • Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

  • Independently set priorities and follow up with relevant parties to meet strict deadlines, while managing a large workload.
  • Give clear direction, instruction, and guidance while working with a variety of groups and individuals.
  • Write strong decisions by interpreting applicable law and policy.
  • Mediate and negotiate resolutions to access to information and/or privacy issues.
  • Prepare and present complex information and communicate in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences.
Your background and experience
  • Law degree plus a minimum of 5 years of recent related work experience.
  • A practicing member of the Law Society of British Columbia or meets eligibility requirements for practicing membership.
  • International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP certification) or equivalent would be an asset.
  • Communication, negotiation, legal writing, legal research, and statutory interpretation skills are essential.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
